Today’s markets are more complex than ever before. Unprecedented levels of competition, tech-savvy consumers, an accelerated business pace, an evolving regulatory landscape, and seemingly ceaseless changes are creating new challenges for Project Managers.
Succeeding in this environment requires Project Managers playing by a different set of rules. Managing time, costs, quality, scope, risks and other traditional practices are still a vital foundation of good project management, but to achieve excellence, Today’s Project Managers must go beyond the manual.
Here the principles I think are crucial to provide Delivery Excellence in your projects:
- Never forget who is your client: there aren’t “Technical” Projects, there are only “Business” Projects. Business is always the final client of any project, so Project Manager must deeply understand Business’s goals and how its project can provide value to these goals.
- Your project needs Project Marketing. Things changes rapidly and Project marketing sustains your project against change in manager’s attention or from other initiatives.
- Address issues and don’t stop until they are resolved. Problems don’t sort by them self. It your job to address them or they will come up again.
- Managing Changes. Changes are not exceptions; they are part of the normal project live. refuse it provokes troublesome and costly consequences. Fostering change to initiate and maintain worthy initiatives, is an art and science.
- Lead by example. Hard work and honesty cannot be faked, if you want other to achieve higher standards, you have to show them the same attitude.
- Manage the team. Your project team is like an engine. To high perform, it requires maintenance and care and sometimes also the replacement of some components.
